Fiber Up

Eating foods rich in dietary fiber is a heart healthy way to improve your life. Fiber aids in digestion, keeps your digestive tract healthy, and can help prevent heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. So what is the best way to add more fiber to your diet? It is easier than you might think.

Make sure to include at least five servings of fruits and vegetables in your diet each day. Some fiber rich fruits and vegetables include apples, berries, oranges, pears, prunes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, beans, and peas. Try to eat more raw vegetables and fruit, and include the skins if possible. Boiling them causes them to lose up to one-half of the available fiber.

Replace white bread with whole-grain bread and eat brown rice instead of white rice. Oatmeal and multi-grain cereals are also a great way to add fiber. Bran cereal is a good source of fiber. Look for whole-grain pasta as well.

The key is to start slowly. Fiber should be increased in your diet gradually, in order to avoid bloating, cramping, and gas. Add a new source of fiber every few days and be sure to drink plenty of water as you increase your fiber intake.
